Identity governance systems combine authoritative data, correlation, lifecycle logic, approvals, roles, access requests, provisioning, certifications, and target-system behavior.
The most useful test cases therefore cross those boundaries.
Build Test Personas
Create representative identities that reflect the scenarios the production environment must support, such as:
- New employee
- Contractor
- Transferred employee
- Manager
- Terminated user
- Rehire
- Privileged user
- Service account
- User with missing data
- User with conflicting target accounts
Test Complete Events
A joiner test should begin with authoritative-source data and end with the expected:
- Identity attributes
- Lifecycle state
- Birthright access
- Target accounts
- Entitlements
- Notifications
- Audit results
A termination test should validate revocation behavior and exceptions—not simply that a disable request was generated.
Include Negative Scenarios
Test conditions such as:
- Missing required attributes
- Duplicate identifiers
- Unreachable target systems
- Expired credentials
- Policy conflicts
- Failed approvals
- Invalid provisioning values
- Partial failures
- Retry behavior
These scenarios expose supportability weaknesses before production does.
Maintain a Regression Pack
Keep a repeatable set of high-value scenarios and execute them after:
- Platform upgrades
- Connector changes
- Role-model updates
- Lifecycle changes
- Rule or workflow changes
- Infrastructure changes
Useful principle: if a production incident would be painful to diagnose or recover from, it deserves a test scenario before go-live.
